I look like a hot mess

Come to session as your are. Maybe you haven’t worn anything but leggings and a loose t-shirt in weeks. Perhaps your “messy” bun looks more like a rat nest than a perfectly curated up-do. Maybe you have random mystery stains on your shirt or you feel self-conscious with how your body looks right now. Maybe you are grieving or sleep deprived and showering is the last thing you have energy for. All of this is normal. You are surviving, and you reached out to me because you need extra support.

The last thing you need to be worried about is if your therapist is going to judge you for how you look in your session. I do not want you to feel stressed before your session because you don’t feel “presentable.” In fact, it is good for your therapist to see what your normal looks like. If your responsibilities or mental health are negatively impacting your self-care, I need to know that. Don’t put on an act that keeps me from seeing the struggle you are experiencing. Show up as you are, so that I can provide you the right support with where you are. It is okay to look like a hot mess right now, so come as you are and let’s focus on the work instead.
